Staying fit doesn't mean you have to hate it
While we've all been a bit discouraged with our fitness routines lately, it doesn't mean you have to forget about trying to get a little workout in. Sometimes, all it takes is a brisk walk, jog or run to lift your spirits. But, don't overdo it. Especially if you've been inactive for awhile. Ease back into your routine, and before you know it you'll have a smile on your face. Too bad it will be covered with a mask.
Here are a few tips to keep your fitness regimen challenging and fun. Sometimes all it takes is a different perspective.
- Head for the hills. Don't be afraid to take a brisk walk in your local hiker's paradise. If there's no local trailhead, there are likely parks, or even school stadiums you can use to break a sweat.
- Don't park too close. I'm not talking about on the street. I'm talking about at your local grocery store, pharmacy, or restaurant. Park in the parking spot that will take you about 10 minutes to briskly walk the distance. Your extra effort will be harder at first, but after a few weeks you will actually enjoy the extra exercise.
- Mix it up. No, I'm not talking about that powdered protein drink. I'm talking about where you go to raise your heartrate. If you usually go to the park, go to the beach. If you walk the neighborhood, try that place that has the nice coffee shop and make that your reward.
- Smile. I know that sounds silly. But, it always makes me feel better when I am smiling. And, there's lots of evidence that laughter and a happy disposition is actually healthier for you.
- Hydrate. What? Yep. Simply taking in more water will help you as you exercise, help your body to deliver all those endorphins pumping through your body, and provide your cells the raw materials they need to take care of all those chores we heap upon them.
- Take long deep breaths. You will not believe how that alone could elevate your spirits. A great big deep breath will fill you with vitality.
Don't let circumstances stop you from doing your new routine. It's okay to miss a day every now and then, but if you do this right, you will be looking forward to your new found plans to get moving. And, if you start now, you will have a head start on those extra holiday pounds.
